Day 5: Cardinal

I'm much happier with this cardinal than with yesterday's hummingbird.

I really like how the wings and body turned out.

This involved dropping in water on top of the wet paint to form some blooms. It didn't work as well as I'd hoped so I ended up blotting up some areas with a paper towel to try and give some variation to the colour.

I don't often purposely try to create blooms, so I found it a little tricky -- seems like there's some timing involved.

This was actually my second try. The first go around I sketched my own cardinal (which didn't look too bad) but then I badly messed up the wings. I had the feathers going vertically instead of flowing to the left. So I had to redo it but couldn't bear to draw another cardinal, so for this second attempt I traced it from the tutorial I'm following.

Very happy I managed 5 days in a row of painting, as the last time I tried this I only made it to Day 4.

My next painting is another bird -- a mallard, if I remember correctly.

Happy painting!
